Audio-visual material

Various reel to reel films, videocassettes and sound recordings, along with selected digitised copies of films relating to the hospital. These include promotional television appeals for the charity; events and visits from the Royal family, such as the Queen Elizabeth's visit to open Chatsworth Wing, 1978; clinical films showing patients undertake rehabilitative and leisure activities such as hydrotherapy and horseriding, and also recordings of radio shows which featured the Hospital.

Oral history interviews

Oral history interviews on the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the hospital. The interviews were conducted as part of the National Lottery Heritage Project, Preserving and sharing the historic archives of the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability that ran at the hospital from December 2019 to November 2021. The interviews were conducted remotely due to Covid-19 social distancing regulations at the hospital and were conducted by Chris Olver, RHN Archivist, and staff members at the hospital.

There is a wide variety of types of records include committee minutes, correspondence, admission case books, domestic ledgers, reports, fundraising pamphlets and audio-visual material and photographs.

This series contains photographic images, negatives and mounted slides. Photographic material, c.1906-present, contain images of the building and grounds, staff and patients, publicity images of services, events and VIP visits.

Therapies, services and research

Mixed photographs prints and negatives of various services and therapies, including examples of assistive technology created for patients in the Biomedical Department, 1980s; religious service at the hospital and occupational therapy session activities, such as basket weaving.

Letters received by Fundraising Department

Letters received by the Fundraising Department from the public which refer to a historic connection or past memory of the institution, these include a former nurse wartime experience training at the hospital during the Blitz.

Annual reports

Annual reports for the charity, 1905-present, which typically include a financial statement, a list of board of management members and senior staff, donation details and photographs and illustrations of the hospital. The reports were published as a single pamphlet or booklet, some of the early reports have been bound together into hardboard volumes. Reports dating from 1858-1901 were not published separately and can be found within the subscription books (archive ref: RHN/FU/2/2). The reports may also be found within the reports of the general meeting volumes (archive ref: RHN/AD/1/1).

Reports and printed slides of a presentation, including presentation slides, 'Building a better future for disabled people in partnership with local business', no date; report, '1999/2000 Fundraising Development Strategy Review' and report, 'Online fundraising growth and integration report', 2012 and a social media audit carried out for the Hospital by Aristos, a consultancy firm, in November 2012.

Visitor's book

Official visitor book for visiting Royal and aristocratic dignitaries. Each page has the occasion of their visit written in a calligraphic font and the signature of the visitor. Signatories include: Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom; Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997); Andrew Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire (1920-2004); Antonia Douro, Princess Antonia (1955-); Charles, Prince of Wales (1958-); Anne, Princess Royal (1950-) and Edward, the Earl of Wessex (1964-).

Handbooks, leaflets, brochures chiefly relating to rules for hospital employees and patients. These include: the 1938 and 1944 editions of the handbook for rules, including salary information for all staff in the latter; a list of rules for patients mounted on card, 1926; patient's handbook, c.1985; patient's handbook, c.1995 and a patient welcome pack, c. 2009.

The patient handbook provide a guide of the services' and activities available, along with rules regarding visitors, smoking and alcohol, and also contain a floorplan for the hospital.
