Case book, Volume 1

The book give a description of candidates, known as 'cases' who applied for home or extra relief from the charity. The volume contains case numbers 1-500 and dates from 12 October 1854 to 8 September 1859. As the book records 'case' who were admitted into the hospital, the book was regularly updated primarily to record deaths but also contact details of family members or supporters or other remarks. Includes a letter received from an 'extra' patient named Eliza Jules, dated 8 November [1895], regarding a change in her income, and some later notes written in ballpoint pen about early cases at the hospital, c. 1990s.

Christmas appeal for the hospital thought to be written by William Scriven, who wrote 2 other similar works for the RHHI, and illustrated by Lancelot Speed and Godfrey Hall. Appeal takes the form of a narrative about several visits to outdoor pensioners of the hospital across Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and West Sussex. Includes a number of illustrations of patients and the countryside. Inscribed on an inner page to Mr & Mrs Barnard, 25 Fassett Square, Dalston from Mr Beare.

Letters from the East Country

Christmas appeal for the hospital written by an unknown writer and illustrated by Arthur Collins and Godfrey Hall. Appeal takes the form of letters to unknown recipients relating the narrator’s visits to the hospital's pensioners in their homes in the east of England. Includes a number of illustrations of patients and the countryside, as well as a detached foldout engraving of the hospital. There is an appeal to readers by the Secretary, Frederic Andrew, at the back.

Christmas appeal for the hospital written by Edwin Paxton Hood. Appeal takes the form of a narrative about several visits to the "palatial" hospital. Edwin Paxton Hood was asked by the Secretary, Mr Andrew, to give a lecture at the hospital and subsequently paid other visits where he was able to have more personal talks with the patients. Includes illustrations of patients and a fold-out engraving of the hospital building. Also includes an inserted letter from the Matron, Lucy Begg, dated 23th November 1914, stating how glad she is to have been able to find a copy of this appeal.
