Subscription books

Annual publication containing a fundraising appeal and a list of subscribers to the hospital. Each volume provides a list of senior staff and board members of the charity, constitution, appeal for funding, information about providing a financial contribution, a record of the previous years election results, a list of gifts and bequests received in the previous year and a list of subscribers, in alphabetical order. This list provides the names of the subscribers and their addresses, the number of votes that they held, the date when they began subscribers and whether they were an annual or life subscriber.

Early appeals, 1858 to 1901, include a copy of the annual report and accounts.

Memoir of Sir Charles Reed'

Book entitled 'Memoir of Sir Charles Reed', by Charles E B Reed, London, Macmillan and Co, 1883. Sir Charles Reed (1819-1881) was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament for Hackney and St Ives, who was the eldest son of Rev Andrew Reeds (1787-1862).

Photo album of photographs of the hospital

Photographic album of images of the hospital, taken between 1946-1950, presented as a gift to former secretary, J G Pitcher (1946-1951). Album includes a typescript note, dated December 1951 from [Committee board] to J G Pilcher regarding the gift of the album. The letter is signed by 31 signatories.

Album includes black and white photographs of the exterior building of the hospital, including an aerial photograph, along with images of staff and patients including a garden fete in the hospital gardens.

Pencillings in June

Christmas appeal written by the Rev. Thomas W Aveling D.D., that gives an account of a visit to the hospital. In the pamphlet, the author visits the female and the male wards and communal areas and provides descriptions of some of the patients that he encounters. The volume has an introduction by the Hospital's Secretary, Frederic Andrews, who states that due to the popularity of the pamphlet that it had been reproduced for two years' running.

Bound volume containing the meeting minutes of the annual general meetings of the charity from 1939 to 2004. Volume contains numerous inserts including typescript agendas and annual reports.

Board committee minutes

Bound meeting minutes of the Hospital's Committee Board, who governed the charity. The Board met every fortnight and would make all decisions in relates to policy. When the charity first started the Chairman of the Board was the Treasurer until 1911 when an independent office of chairman was created. The Secretary (now Chief Executive) would prepare the agenda and circulate the minutes to the other committee members.

Committee members for the Board of Management were initially composed of businessmen working in the City of London and later retired military service men, with usually no less than twenty members present at one time.

The meeting minutes are predominantly handwritten but become typescript in the mid 20th century and usually include various inserts of papers discussed during meetings as well as letters and statements transcribed into the minutes.

Minutes of the Finance Committee, 1864-1870, including a clarification of the charity's constitution regarding the hospital's rejection of any candidate receiving parish relief.

Register of legacies

Indexed register of legacies received to the hospital between 1884 and 1895, with annotations and corrections dated up to 1912. Each entry provides the following details of the legacy: date created, full name of the benefactor, executors, amount and notes (e.g. duty free, when payable, other trustees) and when paid.

Handbooks, leaflets, brochures chiefly relating to rules for hospital employees and patients. These include: the 1938 and 1944 editions of the handbook for rules, including salary information for all staff in the latter; a list of rules for patients mounted on card, 1926; patient's handbook, c.1985; patient's handbook, c.1995 and a patient welcome pack, c. 2009.
